Category: How-to Guides

Follow these steps to build a Saturn V rocket from the Plus-Plus 240 pc tube, with checkpoints to keep the stack stable and the glow-in-the-dark pieces working.

Quick answer

Build the Saturn V from the bottom up: sort the 240 pieces by color and finish, assemble the five-engine base and lower stages first, then add the upper stages and payload section. Keep the glow-in-the-dark and metallic pieces for the final outer details so they stay visible.

Why build from the base up

The Saturn V is a tall, narrow stack, so the base carries most of the stability. Starting with the engine cluster and lower stage gives you a solid platform for the upper sections and reduces the chance of knocking the rocket over mid-build. If you build the nose first, you will handle a fragile piece while the heavy lifting is still ahead.

Saturn V build steps

  1. Sort pieces by color and finish: Separate the 240 pieces into white, black, glow-in-the-dark, and metallic groups. Count each group against the guide before you start connecting. If a color is short, recheck the count before building; missing pieces are easier to spot now than after assembly.
  2. Build the five-engine base: Connect the engine nozzles in a five-point pattern, then add a flat layer on top to tie them together. Press each connection firmly until it clicks. A loose engine cluster will wobble later, so test the base on a flat surface before moving on.
  3. Assemble the lower stage: Stack rings upward from the base, alternating colors as shown in the guide. Keep the walls straight by checking from above after every two or three rings. If the stage leans, gently press the high side down before adding more rings; correcting early is easier than fixing a tall stack.
  4. Add the upper stages: Build the narrower upper stages separately, then attach them to the lower stage. Support the lower stage with one hand while pressing the new section on. Attaching a finished upper stage is safer than building upward on the rocket, especially once it is tall.
  5. Place the payload and nose cone: Finish the top section with the nose cone and any payload detail from the guide. Use glow-in-the-dark pieces here if you want the tip to stand out in low light. The nose cone is the most fragile part; carry the rocket from the base, not the top.
  6. Add metallic and glow details last: Swap in metallic pieces along the fins or stripes and use glow-in-the-dark pieces for accents. Press them in gently so you do not disturb the stage below. Keep spare glow pieces near the rocket if you plan to display it in a dark room; they are the first to be noticed.
